Laser Hair Removal: The Good, the Bad, and the Beautiful

Charlie Milz Hair & Beauty • Apr 02, 2024

Laser hair removal has become an increasingly popular method for getting rid of unwanted hair. With its promise of long-lasting results and minimal maintenance, it's no wonder people are flocking to salons like Charlie Milz and spas to zap away unwanted fuzz.

The Science Bit

Our laser hair removal equipment is one of the most advanced devices on the market – gold standard wavelengths in one system: the 755-nm Alexandrite laser and the 1064-nm nd:YAG laser.

Laser hair removal works on the principle of selective photothermolysis, a process that targets specific tissues using light energy. The laser emits a concentrated beam of light that is absorbed by the pigment (melanin) in the hair follicles. The intense heat generated by the laser damages the hair follicle, inhibiting future hair growth. Because the laser targets dark, coarse hairs while leaving the surrounding skin undamaged, it offers a precise and effective method for hair removal. Over time and with multiple sessions, the number of active hair follicles in the treatment area are eliminated, stopping hair growth altogether. It's important to note that laser hair removal is most effective when darker pigments are present in the hair follicle. Blonde, gray and red hair is not suitable for laser hair removal.

But is laser hair removal the right choice for you? Let's dive into the pros and cons to help you make an informed decision.

The Pros of Laser Hair Removal

Long-lasting Results

One of the most appealing benefits of laser hair removal is its long-lasting results. Unlike shaving or waxing, which only provide temporary relief, laser hair removal targets the hair follicle, stopping the growth of hair in treated areas. This means you can enjoy smoother, hair-free skin for an extended period.

Precision

Laser hair removal targets dark, coarse hairs while leaving the surrounding skin undamaged. This precision allows for effective hair removal without the risk of burns or irritation commonly associated with other hair removal methods.

Time-saving

With laser hair removal, you can say goodbye to daily shaving or frequent salon visits for waxing. Over time, this can save you a significant amount of time and effort, making it a convenient option for those with busy lifestyles.

Reduced Ingrown Hairs

Ingrown hairs can be painful and unsightly. Laser hair removal reduces the occurrence of ingrown hairs by targeting the hair follicle directly, preventing hair from growing back in the first place.

The Cons of Laser Hair Removal

Cost

One of the major drawbacks of laser hair removal is its cost. Depending on the size of the area being treated and the number of sessions required, laser hair removal can be seem expensive in the short term. Multiple sessions are usually needed to achieve optimal results, which can add up over time.

Discomfort

While many people report minimal discomfort during laser hair removal, others may experience some level of pain or discomfort during the procedure. The sensation has been described as a snapping or stinging feeling, similar to the snap of a rubber band against the skin. We use chilled air to provide maximum comfort during treatments.

Potential Side Effects

Like any medical procedure, laser hair removal comes with the risk of potential side effects. These can include redness, swelling, and temporary skin irritation which dissipate in a couple of hours. In rare cases, more serious side effects such as burns or changes in skin pigmentation can occur. Long term side effects are extremely rare and clients are fully informed during the consultation.

Not Suitable for Everyone

Laser hair removal is most effective on individuals with dark hair as sufficient pigment needs to be present for effective heating of the hair follicle. People with blonde, red, or grey hair are not suitable candidates for laser hair removal. Additionally, laser hair removal is not recommended for individuals with certain medical conditions or skin types, so a full consultation is essential before undergoing treatment. At Chalrie Milz we also have a laser for effective treatment on dark skin with dark hair.

Preparing for Laser Hair Removal

Consultation

Before undergoing laser hair removal, it's crucial to schedule a consultation with a qualified laser technician. During this consultation, your skin type, hair colour, and medical history will be assessed to determine if you are a suitable candidate for the procedure.

Pre-Treatment Guidelines

  • Avoid sun exposure and tanning beds for at least six weeks before treatment.
  • Shave the treatment area the day before or the day of the procedure.
  • Avoid using skincare products that may irritate the skin, such as retinoids or acids, for a week before treatment.

Decisions, Decisions…

Laser hair removal offers a convenient and effective solution for long-lasting hair reduction. With its precision and ability to target dark hairs, many people find it to be a game-changer in their hair removal routine. However, it's essential to weigh the pros and cons, as well as consult with a dermatologist, to determine if laser hair removal is the right choice for you. While it may not be suitable for everyone, for those who are suitable candidates and willing to make the investment, laser hair removal can be a worthwhile investment in smoother, hair-free skin.
